From the moment that Michael Byrd was born, he understood what it meant to be faced with a challenge.  Diagnosed with a rare form of Spina Bifida, doctors told Michael's parents that he may never walk.  But even at a very young age, Michael was determined not to let anything stand in his way of accomplishing his goals.  After 15 risky surgeries and many years of rehab, Michael beat the odds and is now able to walk without the use of crutches, something doctors said would never happen.  Through hard work and a drive that would not allow him to give up, Michael is now fully mobile and able to play baseball with his young son.

While Michael had a disease that would have made it easy for him to give up, the disease did not have Michael.  Not only did he overcome the challenges associated with his birth defect, but he also become an accomplished fisherman, winning a King Mackerel fishing tournament at Ocean Isle Beach and placing in several others.  For Michael, whenever there is an obstacle in his way, he chooses to soar above it rather than let it get the best of him.
